The issue of water is a key point of European policy and relations are found to maintain the sustainable usability in a number of legal instruments of the Union, but there is no direct funding for water management.
In a number of EU funding programs the review of programs and projects for conformity with the objectives of European environmental policy is an integral part of the  assessment of eligibility. Projects for the preservation and improvement of water supply conditions are most widely available so far the environmental objectives are met and respected. In principle, the EU prior to the mobilization of funds co-financing with different funding rates. There are several ways to raise funds. The fundamental basis for funding at EU level are the  Structural Funds with the appropriate legal bases supplemented by national eligibility in legal bases for the implementation of these programs.
In addition, EU-wide individual projects can be applied directly to both the EU and from national funding agencies.
Styria made in recent years great efforts to participate in major projects around the new challenges to do full justice and costs associated with the objectives of the Water Framework Directive. Overall, Styria is involved in EU-wide projects at a level of projects totals more than € 25 millions. With a national effort of 2.730 413 €, supported by state and federal governments, that made the access to the current topics of the projects or the implementation of measures in transposing the goals of EU directives.
